Title: Our Island
As for me and my household, we will serve the LORD. – Joshua 24:15
Do you remember the show Survivor? The show sends people to remote locations with very few supplies to get by. They get hungry and lonely, often wondering why they placed themselves in this game.
John, one of Jesus’ disciples, was placed on the island of Patmos for preaching the Gospel. Like the TV show Survivor, he had three days’ worth of food, ink, and paper, and that was it. The island was described as a “rocky barren island.” It had been the Roman government’s chosen place of banishment for criminals. I would probably question God why if I were in John’s place. It was lonely; no one to talk to. No entertainment. Just the thought of being in this desolate place would be depressing. I am sure John felt like this was it. Then, the opening letter of Revelation tells us the angels were sent to John to let him know what the new assignment was, and we know that assignment was ” The revelation from Jesus which God gave him to show us what is soon to take place.”
In life, it can feel like we are on an island, and we may question God, but like John, we need to be patient and ready to serve the Lord when he calls.
