Title: Foot in the Mouth
Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up – Ephesians 4:29
Oh, the old foot-in-the-mouth disease; we have all been there. As a kid, it seemed like we were always talking about and making fun of someone or being talked about and made fun of. Looking back, the reason I did it as a kid is the same reason I did it as an adult: to feel superior. But a few words, spoken without thought, can tear someone down fast. I’m sure we’ve all been in a spot when we were talked about, so we know the feeling. It’s a stark reminder of the power of our words.
Why can’t we think of those uncomfortable feelings before we speak about others?
Building people up is challenging because it feels funny and sometimes awkward. But it’s in these moments that humility shines. It takes a humble person to encourage and build others up. It takes a real person to think of others first and recognize an opportunity to say or do something nice for someone. Choose to build someone up today, and let’s think before we speak.
Real Men build and encourage one another.
